THE NIGHTLY VISIT THE NIGHTLY VISIT Each dawn I wake, my mind lets you go,As I rise and greet the waking light.Away you fade into the night,Where shadows softly ebb and flow. By day I forget, I’m briefly free,Yet night remembers all we knew.My heart aches, and feels so blue,As dreams fade, and you leave me. The sunlight drives away each trace,Of whispered words and gentle touch.I tell myself I miss you much,As daylight moves at rapid pace. The long day ends, darkness begins to creep,And slumber claims my tired head.A vision dances in my bed,As I plunge back into deep sleep. I find myself again in a different plight,The day’s resolve begins to wane.Your ghost returns to life again,And fills my dreaming soul with fright. The moon ascends, a pearl so bright,And in my dreams, your laughter rings. The peaceful joy that memory brings,As you come again into my sight. Your laughter echoes in the gloom,A melody both sweet and grim,I reach for you, my senses swim,Revisiting your empty room. You smile on me, without regret,The way you did in days of old,A story beautifully told,A memory I can’t forget. A momentary dance in fields of green,Your eyes hold warmth, a tender glow,Lost in this dream that continues to flow,A world that borders on the obscene. But morning comes, the visions fade,I wake to find you gone again,This lonely, aching, sorrowful pain,Leaves me alone, broken, and afraid. I wake to face another lonely day,And start the cycle once again,Until the darkness quells the pain,When dreams will lead you back my way. This nightly torment, sweet and deep,A fragile comfort, softly sighed,Is something that I cannot hide,A promise that my heart will keep. Oh, phantom love, when will you cease? You come and go, and never stay. This cycle turning, night and day,And grant my weary spirit peace. ©Habib Dabajeh
